The European bilberry bush is a low-growing shrub in the Ericaceae family that produces dark blue, edible berries. Also called whortleberry, bilberry is a close relative of American blueberries, cranberries, and huckleberries. Native to Europe and the British Isles, Vaccinium myrtillus flourishes in damp acidic soils.
Bilberry fruits are popular in Europe and are often made into jams, juices, pies, baked goods, liqueurs, and more. Bilberries can be used fresh or dried in a similar manner as blueberries. Although they have an extensive and delicious history in the culinary world, bilberries also have a long history of use in traditional European herbalism. Bilberry’s antioxidant properties help maintain good health and fight free radicals.*
Our clearance organic bilberries can be used in a variety of culinary dishes, extracted, macerated in liqueurs and vinegars, made into herbal syrup, or used as a natural fabric dye.
