Black pepper is native to India and has been a popular spice for millennia. Now, the spice can be found almost anywhere on the planet. Black peppercorn brings warmth and pungency to a diversity of culinary recipes. Beyond flavoring dishes, it has been employed in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its wellness-supporting qualities.

Peppercorns are the fruit of Piper nigrum, a member of the Piperaceae family native to southern India and Sri Lanka. It is a perennial vine with aromatic, green, ovate leaves and greenish-yellow flower spikes. Black peppercorns are picked when immature and dried in the sun for several days, turning the fruit a black color. This is the most common peppercorn commercially available.

Black pepper has been cultivated in southern India for millennia. The spice has a long history intertwined with humans. It was written about by Pliny the Elder and was considered a symbol of fine cuisine in Europe through the Middle Ages. In Asia, black pepper is considered a powerful plant useful in a variety of applications. In Ayurveda and TCM, peppercorns are considered energetically pungent and hot. They are often combined with other herbs and blended into botanical formulations.

Our clearance ground black pepper is organic and fair trade. It is a fine grind that can be used to flavor sauces, marinades, and a multitude of culinary dishes. Black pepper powder can also be added to herbal infusions for a pungent spice.
