Geranium maculatum is an herbaceous perennial native to the woodland habitats of eastern North America. Cranesbill is a low-growing bush with toothed leaves and pinkish-purple flowers. Used for centuries for its healthful properties, cranesbill root is typically prepared in topical applications, as a decoction, or extracted.

Cranesbill is used for its tannins, compounds that cause proteins in mucous membranes and other linings of the human body exposed directly to the tea to cross-link.
