For thousands of years, comfrey root has been highly regarded in traditional European herbalism for its healthful properties in topical preparations. Symphytum officinale is native to Europe and temperate Asia but is now naturalized worldwide. A member of the borage family, the plant has large, hairy leaves, a scorpioid inflorescence of bell-shaped flowers, and black roots. Although black externally, the roots are white and fleshy on the interior.
The Latin name Symphytum derives from the Greek “symphis” and roughly translates to knit together. Comfrey has a long history of use in Western herbalism dating back to the Middle Ages. Comfrey naturally contains allantoin, a compound that promotes healthful skin. The root is often incorporated into body care formulas and other topical care recipes. Comfrey root tincture can be added to homemade salves and balms or massaged directly into the skin. Our comfrey root extract is for external use only and should not be used on broken or abraded skin.
