Hericium erinaceus is an edible, toothed mushroom that grows throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Lion’s mane typically thrives on dead or dying hardwoods and nowadays is commonly cultivated. Also referred to as a bearded mushroom, lion’s mane grows as a clump of white, cascading, tooth-like spines. Both the genus and species name translate from Latin as “hedgehog”.
Lion’s mane was used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years as a digestive tonic. The mushroom is full of beta-glucans and complex polysaccharides making it a nutritious and popular choice for wintertime support. Lion’s mane is praised for its beneficial properties especially its specific qualities as a nerve tonic and nootropic. It has become highly studied for its wellness supporting properties. The alluring fruiting body of lion’s mane is also used as an ingredient in gourmet culinary dishes.
