Milk thistle originates in southern Europe and North Africa to Asia and is now dispersed around the world. Sliybum marianum grows to heights of three to seven feet as an annual or biennial, with smooth, shiny, lettuce-like leaves with white veins and spines along the margins, and a solitary purple flower that grows up to a two-and-a-half-inch diameter. It has a lengthy history of use as an edible plant.

A member of the Asteraceae or sunflower family, milk thistle contains a complex of flavonoids called silymarin that are its most active constituents. This herb is most known for its strong affinity for the liver, as it supports the liver’s natural detoxification process.*

Our milk thistle tincture is made with dried organic seed and organic alcohol. Having a rather bitter flavor, milk thistle extract pairs well with burdock root extract and nettle extract. It can be added to water or juice or a cup of tea such as turmeric ginger tea.
