A flowering perennial in the buckwheat family, Rumex acetosella is native to Europe and Asia. The plant is considered a weed in many places throughout the Northern Hemisphere where it has since naturalized. However, sheep sorrel is appreciated for its tart flavor and healthful properties. Sheep sorrel powder can be sprinkled in soups, steeped as tea, blended into herbal formulas, or applied topically.
Sheep sorrel is widely regarded as a noxious weed with 45 of the fifty states reporting it as an intruder, but the small, creeping plant has a long-standing reputation as a beneficial herb. Sheep sorrel does have some culinary value as a garnish and a tart flavoring agent in salads and soups and is one of the main ingredients in Chinese hot and sour soup. Sorrel does make a wonderfully cooling beverage and soup, and its tart flavor is a perfect foil for hot and spicy herbs and seeds. Sheep sorrel is a member of the Polygonaceae family.
