Wild lettuce has its cultivation origins in Europe and is now naturalized throughout North America, allowing for harvesting in the wild. This botanical is not a vegetable but in fact a woodland member of the sunflower. Wild lettuce is a biennial plant and a member of the Asteraceae family. It was commonly known as “lettuce opium” in earlier official pharmacopoeias, referring to its potent milky latex produced by its stems and leaves.
Wild lettuce herb has been used for centuries in traditional folk herbalism and is known for its bitter and nervine qualities. The leaf and stem are typically steeped into tea or crafted into tincture.
Our wild lettuce extract is made in small batches using fresh, organic aerial portions and certified organic alcohol. It has a somewhat bitter taste and can be taken in water or juice or blended with other extracts such as ginger, passionflower, or kava kava. Wild lettuce tincture provides a healthful boost when added to teas including evening repose tea or turmeric ginger tea.
