Zanthoxylum clava-herculis is native to the southeastern United States. This revered tree has distinctive spines along its bark and leathery leaves with panicles of small, white flowers. The botanical name is derived from zanthos and xylum which equates to “yellow wood”. Prickly ash is a member of the Rutaceae, or citrus family.
Native American tribes in eastern regions have employed prickly ash for its wellness qualities for many centuries. The tradition of using this herb in healthful ways was carried on by the Eclectic herbalists. Prickly ash has sialagogue properties making it valuable for many applications. Also, its alterative abilities are a forefront in its long list of helpful attributes.
Our prickly ash extract is created in small batches from the dried bark by our expert team in Eugene, Oregon. This liquid extract has a bitter flavor and can be mixed with other extracts including gentian extract or burdock extract for creating a homemade bitters blend, or it can be combined with warming herbs like cayenne extract. Prickly ash tincture can be taken in water or juice or with teas like grateful heart tea for an added healthful boost.
