As a member of the mint family, Ocimum basilicum leaves produce a pungent yet sweet aroma and taste slightly peppery with a hint of anise. The fresh or dried leaf is most commonly used however, the flowers are edible as well. Basil leaves can be used in fresh salads, sandwiches, pesto, or in your favorite savory baked good.
Basil flourishes in a growing environment that offers full sun and plenty of warmth. When planted in well-draining, rich soil the plants can grow up to 18 inches tall and provide several yields within the season. Basil is typically grown outdoors in the summer but can also be grown year-round if potted indoors.
When planting, you can either start seeds indoors three to four weeks before the last frost date or directly outside once temperatures have reached 60 degrees. Seeds and seedlings should be planted at least 10-12 inches apart to allow room for growth. For healthy and bountiful plants, remember to keep the soil moist where planted and remove flower heads to ensure leaves will continue to sprout.
