Leah Penniman co-founded Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY in 2010 with the mission of ending the racism she saw in our food system, and as a means of reclaiming the ancestral connection to the land of Black and Brown people. Drawing on her life-long love of the earth, the self-described “soil nerd” has facilitated training programs for Black and Brown people in an effort to foster greater equity in food distribution for communities where fresh produce is scarce to nonexistent. Farming While Black is a comprehensive guide to establishing roots in the soil for people of color. Rooted in social justice, this book covers every aspect of establishing and running a small-scale farm for the purposes of feeding underserved communities, and raising awareness of the historical struggles of people of color in land ownership and agriculture.
