Horsetail is an ancient plant with a recorded history dating almost 350 million years ago to the Devonian period. Before dinosaurs roamed the Earth, horsetail was as tall as a modern palm tree. Equisetum telmateia has since evolved and now reaches heights of approximately twelve inches. Horsetail is native to temperate climates across the Northern Hemisphere and loves to grow in moist soils.
This historic plant has a tradition of use in various ancient healing practices in support of the urinary system. Horsetail is also high in minerals and is often prepared in support of bone health. It even has a history of use in external practices by the ancient Greeks. Various tribes indigenous to North America would use the tea as a diuretic, kidney tonic, and a cough remedy for horses.
Horsetail is one of the most abundant source of silica in the plant kingdom and has even been employed to polish metal. The herb was graced with the common name "scouring rush" from this very application. Other uses of horsetail include as an ingredient in shampoos and skincare products.
