Product Details

Pleurisy is a variety of milkweed native to eastern North America. This plant thrives in dry, wide-open fields, on roadsides, and somewhat moist sand prairies. It is a popular plant in country gardens, and is known to attract butterflies, particularly monarchs. The alkaloids present in the mature plants are considered toxic to livestock.

Asclepias tuberosa has been traditionally used by indigenous cultures for centuries. Much of the plant is edible, including the young shoots, flower buds, and stems. The fibers can be used to make fabric or rope. Pleurisy root has an affinity for the pulmonary system and is commonly used topically for a range of healthful benefits.

Our pleurisy tincture is made from the dried roots of the plant in small batches at our extract facility in Eugene, Oregon. This extract has a somewhat bitter flavor and can be taken in water or juice. It also blends well with other extracts such as elecampane extract, marshmallow extract, or mullein extract. A bit of pleurisy extract could be added to spring care tea for a well-rounded combination.
