Pausinystalia johimbe is a stately evergreen tree growing up to 100 feet in height. Native to western and central Africa, yohimbe grows in lowland forests. The tree has grey to reddish-brown bark and oval-shaped leaves which are grouped into threes. Yohimbe, also referred to johimbi, belongs to the Rubiaceae plant family.
Yohimbe bark has a long history of use for its beneficial properties in traditional West African herbalism. Today, the herb is widely popular for its amorous nature. The bark contains the alkaloid, yohimbine, thought to be responsible for many of the botanical’s favorable qualities. Yohimbine has since been synthesized in a lab and is now sold as a prescription drug. The yohimbe bark offered by Mountain Rose Herbs should not be equated with the synthesized yohimbine.
Our yohimbe bark is wildharvested and typical preparations include tincturing as a liquid extract.
