Our organic blood orange oil is cold pressed from the peels of Citrus sinensis. These unique fruits are similar in appearance to oranges on the outside, but the flesh within is a deep shade of raspberry red. This is due to a natural mutation of the orange that occurred in the southern Mediterranean during the 18th century.
During the fall and winter nights when the temperatures are cool, these oranges produce anthocyanins which give our fruits and vegetable their red colors. Although we see this shade in a variety of produce including berries, eggplants, and passion fruit, it is uncommon for it to be found in the citrus family. This slight difference in constituents results in a sweeter orange with hints of rich berries.
Blood orange essential oil is a top note and carries the bright tartness of raspberry with a strong base of citrus. It has a satisfyingly sweet aroma that is uplifting and refreshing with many layers of fruity complexity.
Blood orange oil can be used interchangeably with sweet orange oil in cleaning recipes for its limonene content that acts as a natural degreaser. The rich aromatics can be used in body care blends, perfumes, and in aromatherapy. It blends well with many other oils from woody, citrus, to floral and vanilla.
Aroma
Forward notes of fresh orange peel with a complex aroma of sweet, tart berries.
Constituents
This oil primarily contains limonene, which can make up to 95% of the constituents. It also contains myrcene and α-pinene. Limonene is also in most citrus oils like tangerine, bitter orange, mandarin, lemon, and grapefruit. Myrcene and α-pinene are both found within hemp, myrtle, juniper berry, vitex, and angelica root oils.
Blending and Uses
Blood orange oil is easy to incorporate in a wide variety of perfumes and body sprays. It is a near-universally agreeable oil that matches well with a wide variety of aromas and supports a positive mood. Combine with sandalwood and rose for a sophisticated natural perfume. Due to the berry notes this orange oil blends particularly well with juniper, cedarwood, and cypress for an earthier perfume or cologne.
This oil makes an excellent ingredient for aroma and bathroom sprays. It helps to freshen stale air and can be mixed with spearmint or geranium or other citrus like tangerine or grapefruit. Use in diffuser blends for bright and fresh aromatherapy throughout your home with oils like rosemary, petitgrain, lime, or coriander.
Blood orange blends well in autumnal inspired soaps and lotions with ginger, clove, and cardamom. It also pairs well in herbaceous combinations of basil, tea tree or thyme.
