Product Details

Elecampane is a member of the Asteraceae plant family, the same plant family that sunflowers and calendula belong to. Native to southern and eastern Europe, Inula helenium is now naturalized around the world. The plant is reportedly named after Helen of Troy, who carried the flowers with her when Paris abducted her from Sparta. Elecampane grows up to six feet tall with large, pointed leaves, yellow, daisy-like flowers, and aromatic roots.

Elecampane root has been used for its healthful properties in traditional European herbalism since the time of ancient Greece. The root is considered energetically warming and drying with a special affinity for the digestive and respiratory systems. Elecampane was also a part of various Native American healing systems, where the roots were employed for their wellness supporting qualities. The large, herbaceous plant is steeped in folklore, supposedly having a strong connection to elves and fairies.

Elecampane extract is aromatic with a strong, slightly bitter flavor that is spicy and earthy. Elecampane tincture can be added to syrups, confectionaries, infusions, and herbal wines. It can even be diluted and applied topically. Elecampane extract blends well with mullein extract, marshmallow extract, and horehound extract.
