The California poppy is the beloved flower of the state of California and is known to cover vast swaths of land in brilliant orange during the spring and summer seasons. Considered an ancient plant whose origins are not entirely known, California poppy is also called California sunlight or cup of gold. While the flower does grow wild throughout western North America, it is also found in many gardens. Thriving in full sunlight, this drought resistant plant is a favorite of many modern-day herbalists for its healthful properties.
Eschscholzia californica is a tender perennial plant highlighted by 2 to 4 inch wide flowers that open in bright sun and close on cloudy days and at night. A member of the Papaveraceae family, California poppy has blue-green leaves that are divided into lobed segments and bears solitary four petaled, yellow-orange flowers on long stems. Native to the western United States and Mexico, the plant is considered an annual in colder climates and a perennial in temperate climates.
California poppy has a long history of use amongst Native American healing traditions and was eventually adopted into American folk herbalism as well. Indigenous tribes of California prized the plant as a source of food and for the oil that could be extracted from the plant. Additionally, various tribes would use the entire plant both internally and externally for their wellness supporting properties. In American folk herbalism, California poppy was used as a gentle nervine and for its calming effects.
