Product Details

Couchgrass is a hardy grass that thrives in temperate regions worldwide. It is also known as dog grass, deriving this common name from the simple fact that dogs will intuitively eat the grass when they are sick. Although it is considered an invasive weed in many countries where it has naturalized, couchgrass has been employed for its wellness supporting properties in traditional European herbalism for thousands of years.

A member of the Poaceae family, Elymus repens is a common perennial grass native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. It has creeping rhizomes which allow the plant to successfully spread rapidly. Couchgrass has flat, linear, hairy leaves and upright flowering spikes. The leaves are considered forage for many mammals. Also called quick grass, quack grass, and twitch grass, dog grass is now naturalized throughout most of the world.

Couchgrass has been used in traditional European folk herbalism for millennia. The demulcent roots are considered to have an affinity for the urinary tract and kidneys. Herbalist Nicholas Culpeper wrote that "although a gardener may be of another opinion, a physician holds that a 1/2 acre of dog grass to be worth 5 acres of carrots twice told over." Dog grass root is typically blended into herbal formulations and can be taken as a tea, tincture, syrup, or employed topically. The roots were even dried and powdered for use as incense in medieval times when other resin-based incenses were unavailable.

Our couchgrass tincture is made from organic root and macerated in organic grain alcohol. Monitored for quality throughout the extraction process, it is made in small batches by our well qualified team. A sweet tasting root, couchgrass extract can be combined with similar acting herbs such as corn silk extract, hydrangea extract, and uva ursi extract. Dog grass tincture can be taken on the tongue or added to water or fruit juice, especially cranberry juice.
