Licorice is a prolific herb, being one of the most widely used botanicals in the world. It is the single most utilized herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine today. The ancient Egyptians flavored a drink called “Mai-sus” with licorice, and large quantities of the root were discovered in the tomb of King Tut to aid his trip into the afterlife. When travelling with Alexander the Great, Dioscorides advised his troops to carry and employ licorice to help with stamina for long marches, as well as for thirst in areas of drought.
An impressive number of Chinese herbal formulas (over 5,000) contain licorice root to sweeten teas and to “harmonize” contrasting herbs. The herb contains a constituent that is approximately 50 times sweeter than sugar. Many traditional healing modalities treat Glycyrrhiza glabra as a tonic herb. Licorice root has an affinity for the digestive and respiratory systems and has adaptogenic tendencies.
Licorice tincture has an earthy bitterness, complimented by a distinct sweetness that is characterized as being similar to anise or fennel. Our extract can be combined with others such as astragalus extract or ashwagandha extract. It can be taken directly on the tongue or in water or juice. Try adding it to a mug of chamomile tea, or any other tea of choice.
