Skullcap is a low growing herbaceous plant that is identifiable by its serrated leaves and small, purple or blue tubular flowers. Scutellaria lateriflora, a plant normally found in moisture rich environments, is best grown if planted in similarly moist and nutrient rich soil. Ariel portions of the herb can be collected for use in tea and tincture making.
Skullcap, like other members of the mint family, likes to sprawl. It can grow up to three feet tall and blooms one-sided racemes from late summer into fall. The flowers range in color from purple, blue, or white, and look similar to snapdragons.
Skullcap seeds should be started indoors in late winter. It is recommended that seeds first undergo a stratification process before planting. In the spring, plant seeds in potting soil indoors and seedlings should emerge within two weeks. Once the danger of frost has passed, young plants can be transplanted outdoors.
