A popular culinary herb and vegetable throughout global history, fennel continues to be widely consumed today. Foeniculum vulgare is a member of the Apiaceae family and hosts umbels of sweet-smelling golden flowers that ripen into a fruit known as fennel seed. Fennel was highly valued in ancient Rome, Greece, Egypt, China, and India for its healthful properties and as a talisman for rituals.
For hundreds of years, fennel seed has been employed for its wellness supporting properties in a variety of global healing modalities including in European folk herbalism, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Fennel seeds gently support healthy digestion* and are often served after meals. Fennel seed was traditionally used to relieve occasional gas and bloating.*
In Ayurveda, fennel is called 'samf' or 'saunf', 'madhurika', or ‘shatapushpa’ (amongst other names) and is believed to taste bitter, pungent, and sweet. Ayurveda considers fennel seed to be energetically neutral to slightly warming, and to bring balance to all three doshas. In TCM, aromatic fennel seed is thought to have an affinity for the liver, kidney, spleen, and stomach meridians. Also considered to be energetically warming, fennel seed was often taken as a carminative, to nourish the brain, and calm the spirit. Fennel seed cordials are popular throughout Europe as a digestif.
Our organic fennel seed extract is made at our extract facility in Eugene, Oregon by our expert crew. Aromatic, slightly bitter, and sweet, fennel tincture combines well with a number of extracts to create a personalized blend. We particularly enjoy fennel extract with chamomile extract, calendula extract, and lemon balm extract. Fennel seed tincture can also be taken directly on the tongue or in still, bubbly, or warm water.
