Product Details

A late summer to early autumn wildflower, goldenrod has a long history of use for its beneficial properties. Laden with sticky pollen, this golden plant is a favorite of bees and other pollinators. Often mistaken for ragweed, goldenrod is usually employed to ameliorate springtime symptoms that wind pollinated ragweed can cause.

Native to Europe and Asia, goldenrod is an herbaceous perennial that is now naturalized throughout North America. Solidago canadensis is a hardy plant that grows in pastures and meadows as well as along mountainsides and roadsides. A member of the Asteraceae family, goldenrod has panicles of many golden flowers and alternating leaves along a single stalk. The plant can grow upwards of several feet high and spreads easily.

Goldenrod has a colorful history, having been historically used as a dye by indigenous tribes and settlers. After the Boston Tea Party, the colonists, having just got rid of their favorite beverage, made a tea of goldenrod, and called it Liberty Tea. According to legend, a goldenrod stem could be used by some as a divining rod and folklore spread that when goldenrod grows near a house, the occupants inside will be granted good fortune.

This storied plant also has a long history of use for its various wellness-supporting properties. Goldenrod was used folk herbalism as a tonic herb and for its affinity for the kidneys, urinary tract, upper respiratory tract, and cardiovascular system. Today, the herb is still employed for many of the same uses. Goldenrod is often utilized in the spring months when pollen is abundant and is equally sought after during the winter months for its beneficial properties.

Made from the fresh aerial portion, our organic goldenrod extract is pungent, astringent, and aromatic. Goldenrod tincture can be used in topical applications or taken internally in either water or juice. Goldenrod extract blends well into formulations and is especially suited with nettle extract, uva ursi extract, and plantain extract.
