Product Details

Cayenne is a variety of Capsicum annuum, a plant genus and species that includes bell peppers, paprika, red chili peppers, and pimento. It is a diverse genus that has been used for food as well as for the healthful properties for thousands of years. Cayenne pepper has traditionally been employed by cultures worldwide for its many beneficial properties and has become a staple culinary spice in global cuisines.

A member of the nightshade family, cayenne bears thin, red fruits that reach 10 to 25 cm in length. While some pepper plants grow chilis that stand upright, cayenne peppers hang down from the plant. The burning sensation of hot peppers is a reaction of the central nervous system to the chemical constituent capsaicin; unlike horseradish, garlic, ginger, and mustard, capsaicin only causes the sensation of damage, not real damage to tissues.

C. annuum has been used as a food and healthful herb by indigenous cultures in North and South America for over 9000 years. Historical uses of cayenne pepper include external and internal applications. Traditional healing systems in South America would use the spice to aid in healthy digestive system functioning amongst other uses. Cayenne has an affinity for the circulatory system and when applied topically can be a strong ally. Cayenne pepper is well-studied in clinical trials for its chemical constituent, capsaicin, which is thought to be responsible for many of its beneficial properties.

Cayenne peppers are widely used in cooking. Some of the typical preparations of cayenne include creams, foot soaks, salves, and other external applications. The spice can be combined into herbal vinegars like fire cider for its added wellness support and is also commonly prepared as a liquid extract or encapsulated. Considered energetically warming to hot, cayenne can be combined with garlic and ginger for further support.

Our cayenne tincture is made in our extract facility based in Eugene, Oregon and is macerated using organic alcohol and fresh, organic fruit. Pungent and intense, cayenne extract should be taken in water or juice. Cayenne extract is often added as a warming note in various herbal formulations. It can be blended with cacao-based drinks or combined with other liquid extracts such as kava kava extract, hawthorn extract, or ginger extract.
