Phytolacca americana is an herbaceous perennial in the pokeweed family. Native to eastern North America, the plant is now naturalized in parts of Europe and Asia. Poke root has a long tradition of folk uses in the southern United States and is even incorporated into the region’s festivals and culture. Poke root powder is typically infused for topical use.
Poke is a visually attractive 8 to 10 ft (250-300 cm) perennial with dark green leaves, purple stems, and bright red to bluish-black berries.
