Product Details

Hyssop has a long history of use for its healthful qualities as well as for its folklore. For millennia, hyssop has been employed as a sacred herb and consecrated for cleaning holy places. The plants name comes from the Hebrew word ezob, meaning "holy herb". Hyssop was also hung in homes as a protective plant. Native to southern Europe, the herbaceous perennial is now widely grown in temperate gardens around the world.

Hyssop is an evergreen, bushy, and aromatic perennial. A member of the mint family, Hyssopus officinalis has a square stem, linear leaves, and spikes of purple bi-labiate flowers. Reaching heights of one to two feet, hyssop has a mint-like flavor and has been historically used as a spice in salads and other culinary dishes.

Hyssop has a history of use in traditional European herbalism, dating back to ancient Greece. Considered energetically warming, the herb has a special affinity for the lungs and is often relied upon during the cooler and wetter months. In folk herbalism, hyssop was traditionally employed for its effects on the digestive system, as a diaphoretic, and was even used topically is some situations.

Our hyssop extract is made from fresh, organic material at our extract facility in Eugene, Oregon. The liquid extract tastes bitter and pungent. It can be used on its own in water or juice and is often blended into polyherbal formulations. Hyssop tincture blends well with echinacea extract, yarrow extract, mullein extract, and propolis extract. Hyssop extract can be utilized in homemade syrups and lozenges.
