Salvia miltiorrhiza is a perennial plant in the mint family native to China. The herb is highly valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its red roots and was historically employed for its many beneficial properties. Red sage root, also referred to as dan shen, is typically taken alone or combined with other botanicals in herbal formulations.
The "red" part of its name comes from the red color of the roots; the flowers themselves are large, fragrant clusters of purple or violet. Other common names include Chinese salvia, Chinese sage, and red-root sage.
