Stevia is best grown in rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil with full sun exposure. Stevia rebaudiana is known for its tender leaves that are naturally sweet. The fresh or dried leaves are traditionally used in teas and other beverages.
Stevia is a member of the Asteraceae family, yet unlike most species, it does not produce large, showy flowers. Instead, it will produce clusters of tiny white flowers in the fall. Stevia rebaudiana will grow one to two feet tall and produce many light green leaves. These leaves can be harvested from the plant at any point in the year, however the ideal time to harvest the entire plant is in the early fall before any flower buds have opened.
Stevia seeds should be started indoors at least six weeks before the last frost date. Keep soil consistently moist and in direct light to encourage germination. Seedlings should emerge within 10-15 days and can safely be transplanted outside once they have reached a few inches tall and are producing healthy leaves.
