Product Details

Withania somnifera has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda and still holds an important place in herbal formulations today. In many Asian countries, all parts of the plant are utilized, and the tender leaves are eaten as a gentle nourishing herb.

Ashwagandha is native to India where it grows in the wild but is cultivated throughout the country for larger production needs. Ashwagandha translates to 'smelling like a horse' which most likely refers to the scent of the fresh root. A member of the nightshade family, ashwagandha is also known by the name Indian ginseng and winter cherry. The plant is a perennial, low-growing shrub with elliptic leaves and small, bell-shaped flowers that ripen into an orange-red fruit.

Although all parts of the plant are thought to hold beneficial properties, the root is most often seen in commerce and referenced in herbalism books. Used for millennia in Ayurveda, it is considered “rasayana”, or an herb that promotes the body’s vitality and rejuvenation. It is therefore a highly revered plant. Ashwagandha is considered an overall tonic and adaptogen. In Ayurveda, it is also used to balance various conditions that arise from 'vata dosha' imbalances and is employed as a grounding and nourishing herb, supportive to female well-being. The root is bitter, sweet, and astringent in flavor and energetically mildly warming. Ashwagandha is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as an adaptogen and a nervine to help cope with stress and supports overall cognitive health*.

This well-loved root is typically prepared as a decoction, integrated into herbal tea blends, and tinctured. Ashwagandha tincture has a fairly neutral flavor and blends well into botanical formulations. We think it goes especially well with other tonic herbs such as astragalus extract, reishi extract, holy basil extract, maca extract, and oats extract. Try squeezing a squirt of ashwagandha extract into herbal teas such as holy basil chai, tulsi delight tea, or winter spice tea for added wellness support. Or simply enjoy in water or fruit juice.
