For centuries, triphala powder has been used as a traditional Ayurvedic blend for is beneficial properties. It is considered to have the six Ayurvedic tastes in proper proportion (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent) and is therefore effective for all three dosha types. This blended powder is considered one of the most compatible combinations in Ayurvedic practice and is oftentimes used from childhood to elderhood.

Triphala means “three fruits” and refers to the synergistic Ayurvedic blend consisting of equal parts amalaki, bibithaki, and haritaki fruits. The fruits are dried, powdered, then blended together. Triphala powder is either employed on its own or incorporated into more complex herbal formulas.

Triphala has a strong flavor and typical preparations include blending it with juice, warm water, honey, or ghee. The powder can also be applied topically or encapsulated to hide the powerful taste. Triphala has a mild laxative action, and it is best taken in the evening, two hours after eating, and at least thirty minutes before bedtime. No food should be eaten for at least one and a half hours after ingesting triphala.
