Maca has a fleshy, rectangular root that can vary in color from red, to yellow, to black. Native to the high-altitude Andean Mountains of Peru, this cruciferous vegetable has adapted to harsh weather conditions and survived where little else can grow. A staple food for the native people inhabiting these lands, the root is considered a delicacy in Peru today. Maca is surrounded by folklore which has only served to increase it reverence throughout its native lands.

Maca root powder is typically used as a flour to make cookies, flan, smoothies, and porridge. The root has even been used to brew a unique, local Peruvian beer. Although maca root is often employed in culinary applications, it also has a rich tradition of use as a panacea and is referred to as Peruvian ginseng. Maca is highly appreciated for its adaptogenic and nutritious properties. The root was introduced to North America, Europe, and Japan in the late 1990’s and it has remained a popular botanical since.
