Botanical Name: Valeriana officinalis Capsules Per Bottle: 100 mg Per Capsule: 450
Valerian is a graceful flower with a sweet fragrance in comparison to its pungently aromatic roots. Although the roots are known for their strong scent, they have been used for centuries in traditional Western herbalism for their wellness-supporting properties. Humans aren’t the only mammals attracted to this plant; cats are highly captivated by the root scent in the same way they are to catnip.
Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Valeriana officinalis likes to grow in moist meadows and woodland habitats. Now naturalized to temperate climates throughout North America, valerian grows up to four feet tall at maturity and produces small clusters of pleasant smelling white or pink flowers. The plant’s root system consists of a vertical rhizome and an abundance of smaller rootlets which have a strong odor. A perennial plant, valerian is a member of the Caprifoliaceae family.
For hundreds of years, valerian root has been used in traditional European herbalism. Extending back to the times of ancient Greece, valerian was historically employed as a sleep aid and nervine. However, for a small portion of the population, the root is actually stimulating which certainly goes against the herb’s typical calming properties. These cases are rare and in general, valerian promotes natural relaxation and helps in coping with stress.*
The dried roots are most often used in herbal preparations and are commonly infused as valerian tea or blended into herbal formulations and mixed into herbal tea blends. Valerian root is also found tinctured or encapsulated. Valerian capsules are an easy-to-use preparation and may be advantageous for those with a more discerning palate.
Ingredients Organic valerian root and pullulan capsule. These vegan capsules are made from pullulan which is naturally fermented from tapioca.
Precautions Caution is advised during the use of barbiturates, benzodiazepines, and other sedative drugs, as valerian has the potential to increase the effects of some sedatives. We recommend that you consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
