A commonly used spice around the world, black pepper has brought warmth and zest to culinary dishes for millennia. Native to India and Sri Lanka, black pepper can now be found almost anywhere on the planet. Beyond flavoring dishes, it has been employed in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its beneficial properties.

Piper nigrum is a member of the Piperaceae family. The pepper plant is a perennial vine with aromatic, green, ovate leaves and greenish-yellow flower spikes. Peppercorns are actually the fruits of the plant. Black peppercorns are picked when immature and dried in the sun for several days, turning the fruit a black color.

Black pepper has been cultivated in southern India for over two thousand years. The spice has a long history alongside humans. Legend states that Rome was once held for ransom by Attila the Hun over black peppercorns and they were often considered a symbol of fine cuisine in Europe through the Middle Ages. In Asia, black pepper is considered a powerful plant for a variety of applications beyond its use as a spice. It is considered energetically hot and pungent in Ayurveda and TCM and is often blended into herbal formulations.
