Product Details

American ginseng roots and leaves are combined in this special offering for a holistic representation of Panax quinquefolius. While ginseng root contains a higher concentration of ginsenosides by weight, ginseng leaf contains a wider breadth of these constituents which are thought to be responsible for ginseng’s wellness-supporting qualities. Both ginseng root and ginseng leaf are sourced from farmers dedicated to stewarding this esteemed herb in its native habitat as part of the Forest Grown verified program.

We are grateful for your interest in our new Forest Grown American Ginseng. We are proud to offer the first Forest Grown verified American Ginseng in partnership with the United Plant Savers. This new project brings us organically grown American ginseng that is cultivated in its native ecosystem. The leaves and roots are consciously collected from private forests under stewardship from farmers dedicated to preserving this important plant for the future.

Each combination tin of Forest Grown American Ginseng contains two grams of whole leaf and four grams of whole root.

While American ginseng root has been a valuable part of the global herb trade for hundreds of years, the leaves are not as well known. To gain some insight into why this is, we need to look at the history of trading herbs overseas. The tradition of using only the ginseng root evolved at a time when crude herb was kept in burlap sacks and shipped to the Far East. The leaves cannot take that kind of treatment, but the root can, and this is the reason that usage of the root achieved widespread popularity while usage of the leaves was confined to the fringes.

American ginseng leaves were, in fact, widely used by the indigenous cultures of eastern North America. These cultures have a traditional philosophy of using the whole plant for herbal preparations, and we are offering both the leaves and the roots so that our customers can achieve this synergy as well. Many modern scientific studies have indicated that the leaves actually contain greater concentrations of the same active constituents compared to the root. And since there is not a great demand for the leaves worldwide, this enables people to enjoy the many benefits of American ginseng at a fraction of the cost. American ginseng supports a healthy response to stress and promotes normal levels of physical stamina and endurance*, making it a valuable ally to the modern lifestyle.

Mountain Rose Herbs will donate 5% from every sale of this Forest Grown American Ginseng to the United Plant Savers. We believe that supporting this effort can change the culture of ginseng throughout Appalachia and beyond, transforming the epidemic of black market poaching into a stewarded forest crop with sustainability as the guiding force.

We thank you for supporting conservation through cultivation!

Ginseng is a perennial herb with compound whorled leaves producing flowers with five petals that become a red fleshy fruit.
